Audio Maker Competition

Yoto Space is now open to everyone, and we are holding a very special competition to celebrate that moment and to showcase some of the creativity bubbling away in the Yoto community.

Our first Audio Maker Competition is not (just) for the kids, it’s where adults get to join in the fun, create your own original audio and battle it out to win the top prize.

Whether you’re an audio creative with a project on the go, or just curious to know if you have what it takes to make a successful Yoto Card, this one's for you!

And to make things interesting, there is a $1,000 prize for first place! Plus lots of other great prizes - see them all below.

I’m interested. What can I enter?
Use the categories below for inspiration, or create something different, it’s up to you. The important thing is that it’s kid-friendly, works well as a Yoto Card, and doesn’t break any copyright laws (Find out what we mean by this here).

Follow the links below for articles and tips (all from the Tutorials page) to get started, as well as lots of free (and copyright free) audio building blocks you can use in your creations.

You could make:

  • Your own episode of Yoto Daily

  • A Yoto Card made from a Family Recipe

  • A Soundscapes Card - Sounds of Spring anyone?

  • An Interactive Story where you choose your own way through an adventure

  • A fun Family Quiz

  • A new Yoto Timer to help with one of those important routines of the day

  • Original Songs you have written and recorded

  • An Original Story you have written and recorded

The prizes
A panel of judges will decide the overall winner of the top prize:

  • First prize wins $1,000 (or equivalent where you are)

  • 2nd prize wins $300

  • 3rd prize wins $200

  • 4th prize wins $100

  • 5th prize wins $50

And the community can vote for their favourite entry here on Yoto Space, with the top ten entries by votes each get $100 (or equivalent where you are)

Meet the judges
The panel includes a mixture of adults and children, as kids know best about what they like, but someone needs to make the snacks and do the washing up:

  • Jake from Yoto Daily

  • The one and only Jazzy Ash

  • James Davies, author and illustrator of the “Meet the” series of Yoto Cards

  • Elsie the girl on the Yoto Player box (7 years old)

  • Jess Tarrant, Content Director at Yoto

  • Tomás and Óscar (9 and 7 years old), in their capacity as longest serving Yoto users - since 2016 - and kids of Yoto boss Ben

Judging Criteria
The panel will be looking for the quality of the idea, how well something has been made, and that x-factor that makes them just think “this is really great!”.

They might be impressed with an ambitious interactive story that uses pixel art to find your way around the story. Or they might be won over by a recipe that is fun to make and tasty to eat!

Jake will be on the lookout for tomorrow’s Yoto Daily presenters, and the Yoto content team (who pick the authors and artists that feature on the Yoto Cards you buy) will be on the lookout for fresh talent.

Some other top tips (aka it's not just the audio):

  • Pixel art is a great way to create more engagement when being played (and there are lots of them to choose from as you build your MYO if you don't want to build your own)

  • Card art tells the story too so extra points for making something that stands out

  • Think about your blurb/ description for the entry, it will be shown next to your submission and is the first thing people will see, alongside the card art

Key dates and how to enter

  • Submission are open now, until the end of Sunday 30th April 2023

  • Submit your entry as a shared digital Yoto Card using the form here

  • Winners will be announced on Thursday 11th May, on Yoto Space and Yoto Daily
