Despite their name, meerkats aren’t related to cats—they belong to the mongoose family. The name "meerkat" originates from Afrikaans, where it translates to "termite mongoose."
Meerkats are immune to certain types of venom, including the very strong venom of scorpions and snakes.
Despite living in desert environments, they don't need water. They obtain all the moisture they need from eating insects and other small animals.
Meerkats are social animals that live in groups of around ten to 15, though there can be as many as 50 in their group, which are known as mobs or clans.
Meerkats work great as a team and have different responsibilities. At least one meerkat will be a sentry, who finds a high point and be on lookout for any predators, some will be foraging for food and others will be on babysitting duty, looking after the new pups.
Hi, I am Finn from Scotland. I love Meerkats, they are my favourite animal. They are very cute and they make me happy when I see them.
