Three crafty costume ideas for Halloween

As the moon shines bright on October nights, and Halloween draws near.

Make these crafty costumes together, for the spookiest day of the year đŸ‘»đŸŽƒđŸ”ź

'Suncatcher' wings

Whether they want to be a dragon, a butterfly, a fairy or a bat—you can help them make their own wings with just a few materials.

You’ll need:

  • A large piece of cardboard

  • Scissors and/or a cutting board and blade (with adult supervision)

  • Paint

  • Colourful crepe paper or foil

  • Glue

  • Ribbon, string or elastic

Step 1

Draw the outline of the wings on a piece of cardboard then cut them out.

Step 2

Draw “windows” on the wings, then cut them out on a cutting board, or with a sharp pair of scissors.

Step 4

Paint the wings and let them dry completely.

Step 5

Glue coloured crepe paper or foil in the “windows”

Step 6

Add two loops of ribbon, string or elastic so they’re ready to be worn!

'Pool noodle' spider legs

Turn some pool noodles into ready-to-wear spider legs kids can pop on or off in seconds.

You’ll need:

  • 4 pool noodles

  • Wire

  • Black duct tape

  • Black pipe cleaners

  • Ribbon, string or elastic

Step 1

Put wire inside each of the pool noodles. (If they’re too big at the stage, feel free to cut them down. An adult will help here).

Step 2

Lay your 4 pool noodles side by side and bind together at the centre point with pipe cleaners and duct tape.

Step 3

Bend the pool noodles until they resemble the layout of a spider’s legs.

Step 4

Wrap duct tape around each of the legs. You can add points at the end to make them extra creepy. Or add “sections” to the legs with more pipe cleaners.

Step 5

Attach two loops of ribbon, string or elastic so these spider legs can be worn like a backpack!

Haunted house

You won’t just find ghosts in this haunted house. You’ll find endless opportunities for kids to get creative and customise their costume.

You’ll need:

  • 1 very large box

  • Extra cardboard or paper for decorations

  • Paint, pens or crayons

  • Scissors (with adult supervision)

  • Tape

  • Glue

  • Thick ribbon

  • Bonus: Battery-powered lights

To make the main body of the house

Step 1

Cut the smaller ends off the box and put them to the side (you’ll use them later).

Step 2

Paint the large part of the box any colour and let it dry completely.

Step 3

Using cardboard or paper, create all the spooky additions to your haunted house. Crooked windows, a creaky door, ghosts, bats, spider webs—you name it!

Step 4

Glue or tape all your fang-tastic creations to the house.

Step 5

Tape or weave two large pieces of ribbon at the top of the house, so your child can wear it on their shoulders.

Step 6

Bonus! Tape some green, red or purple battery-powered fairy lights to the inside of the box to make it look extra haunted!

To make the roof hat

Step 1

Paint two sections of cardboard and let them completely dry.

Step 2

Balance the sections together in a triangle shape and tape them together so they resemble a roof.

Step 3

Draw wonky tiles on the roof and decorate with any of your creations.

Step 4

Make a cardboard headband. You’ll need a strip of cardboard to go around the head, and then two strips of cardboard that cross over each other on the crown of the head. (If you like, you can paint these sections before sticking together).

Step 5

Glue or tape the roof to the headband.
