How to design a Yoto Card

James Davies is an illustrator at Yoto, and also the author and illustrator of the excellent Meet the series of Yoto Cards (there is an interview with James over here).

As part of our behind the scenes series, James takes us through the design process for one of the sets of cards he's worked on at Yoto. This set is the Spring collection of Make Your Own cards.

  1. Start sketchy: Small, simple sketches (called 'thumbnails)  show all the fun ideas that pop into your head - go wild!

  2. Think about colour: Make some colour blobs of colours you are thinking of using, to see how they work together.

  3. Make a shortlist: Choosing some of your favourite designs, making them bigger, a bit neater, and adding a bit of colour. At Yoto, this is where we will get together as a team and talk about which things we like, and what we might change.

  4. The final artwork! Here's where you can add fun details and really make your designs pop.
