Conservation Month: The big beach spring clean

Let’s leave our oceans and beaches looking better than ever!

This month at Yoto, we're all about conservation and helping youngsters to make a positive impact on the environment around them. What better place to start than on the water?

Activity ideas

The seas and beaches give us so much joy and ask for very little in return – so why not give a little back and join your nearest beach clean? Or, better yet, if you can’t find one… start your own!

Beach cleans are a fantastic way to make an instant impact on the environment and its inhabitants – all you need to participate is a bin bag, pair of gloves and litter picker. If you don’t live near a beach, you could always find a nearby stream or lake to help tidy up at.

Or, why not bring the beach to you? Just grab a tub, some play sand, water, some ocean friends (toys, not real ones!) and a few small pieces of rubbish to scatter around and pick up. Then give your little one some kitchen tongs that’ll be their ‘litter picker’ and watch them get to work. Oh, and if you’re using your Yoto at the same time, don’t forget it can’t swim, so keep it well away from the water!

When kids are involved, turning it into a game can really make things fun. Like, why not see who can collect the biggest bagful of litter? The winner gets to choose what’s playing on your Yoto for a week.

Staying safe near water

Remember to always stay safe while you’re out on a cleaning mission at the beach or at your nearest body of water. That means staying safe and supervising everyone in your group around the water and making sure everyone has the right equipment… and doesn’t pick up anything that could be dangerous. It’s also good to be aware of tide times too!

Cards to inspire imagination

Of course our card library is simply swimming in ocean-friendly audio content. Why not check out BrainBots: Sea Defenders, Dreams of the Ocean, My Ten Lives, or BrainBots: Our Planet for some wet and wild adventures?

More ways to help

SEA LIFE Trust are helping our sea friends. Find out how you can get involved in World Ocean Celebration 2024!

Don’t forget to comment if you’re keen to help save our seas… you never know, you might find some new friends to make the world that bit better with!

Or let us know how your clean up went. How many bags did you manage to fill? Did you find anything surprising?
