🍂 A Note From Me

This card uses TTS (AI) voice to ensure every word is pronounced clearly and correctly—especially since I'm not a Spanish speaker myself.

All of the words and phrases are chosen and written by me, then stored in a database to keep them kid-friendly and accurately translated. Using TTS also makes it easier to add new seasonal phrases over time.

I completely understand that some families prefer hearing a real voice! While I'm not able to provide that for this card, I've done my best to make the voice sound as natural as possible. It's important to me to be fully transparent about how the content was made so each family can make an informed choice about what they're listening to.

How It Works

Seasonal Spanish automatically selects Spanish vocabulary that matches your child's world right now. When they play the card, they'll hear three tracks:

1. Hello / ¡Hola! - A warm seasonal greeting
2. Word of the Day / Palabra del Día - Today's Spanish word with clear pronunciation, repetition, and example sentences in both languages
3. Goodbye / ¡Adiós! - An encouraging goodbye with seasonal reminders

Getting Started

1. Add the card to your Yoto library
2. Play Seasonal Spanish directly from the app or link to a physical MYO card
3. The card automatically detects your location and season
4. Each play teaches vocabulary relevant to what your child sees outside

Features
• Smart Selection: Words match your hemisphere's current season (winter in July for Australia!)
• Holiday Vocabulary: Special words during Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and other celebrations
• Weather Awareness: Teaches "rain" when it's raining, "snow" when it's snowing
• Natural Teaching: Uses spaced repetition and bilingual sentences for effective learning

Tips for Best Experience
• Play daily for consistent language exposure
• Encourage your child to repeat the words out loud
• Point out the taught words in real life ("Look, there's a mariposa/butterfly!")
• The card works anywhere in the world
• Perfect for ages 3-8, though older children enjoy it too

Technical Notes
The card streams content, so it needs an internet-connected Yoto player. Content updates automatically based on your location, season, and special occasions. No additional setup or configuration required - just play and learn!

Technical information

Seasonal Spanish is built with Go and deployed on Google Cloud Run, providing serverless scalability and global reach. The system uses streaming endpoints that dynamically serve content based on real-time factors. I create the content and translations using DeepL and I use ElevenLabs for text-to-speech.

The word selection engine considers multiple factors in priority order:
1. Current holidays (Christmas, Halloween, cultural celebrations)
2. Weather conditions (via OpenWeather API integration)
3. Season based on hemisphere-aware calculation
4. Usage history to avoid repetition

Location Intelligence
• IP geolocation for automatic location detection
• Hemisphere-aware season calculation (corrects for Southern Hemisphere)
• Timezone detection for accurate holiday timing
• Privacy-first: No persistent location storage

Database Design
This card uses a secure database to store vocabulary and translations, making sure everything is accurate and kid-appropriate. It also keeps text-to-speech costs free for families. The stored data includes:
• Multiple sentence pairs per word for variety
• Season, weather, and holiday associations
• Usage tracking for intelligent rotation
• Audio file mappings for instant streaming

Data storage

All data handling is ephemeral and anonymous by design. Sessions are keyed by IP address but contain no identifying information and are automatically purged. The system operates statelessly with no user accounts or persistent tracking.
