Get ready for the Big Switch Off

So you’ve made your pledge and you’re all set to join us for the Big Switch Off on Friday 12 September.

Here’s a guide to getting ready for a day of screen-free, imagination-fuelled fun, including advice from psychologist and parenting expert, Dr Deirdre Brandner.

Prep the family

Make sure everyone knows what’s happening on the day of the Big Switch Off. You could say something like: ā€œTomorrow, we’re trying something new — 24 hours with no screens. Let’s make a list of adventures we can choose from.ā€

Hide the hardware

Pop remotes/tablets in a box labelled ā€œSleepingā€. Toss a scarf over the television.

Set your own tech boundaries

Turn your phone to greyscale, set an auto-reply (ā€œWe’re on a family screen break — back tomorrowā€) and move chargers out of sight.

Prep audio and analog swaps

Line up Yoto Players and cards, board games, craft kits, outdoor equipment and anything else you have to hand.

Build a boredom-busters basket

Fill it with Play-doh, pipe cleaners, cardboard boxes, scavenger hunt cards and a deck of ā€œWould You Rather?ā€ prompts. Here are some free activities to get you started!

Recruit allies

Let grandparents and other caregivers know about the Big Switch Off.

Schedule 'anchor' events

A morning nature walk and an evening backyard picnic can help to give the day rhythm.

Create a calm corner

Pile up some cushions and sensory tools, such as stress balls, picture books and noise-cancelling headphones.

Make a personal back-up plan

If urgent work pops up, step into another room, set a 5-minute timer, deal with the task and then return to the screen-free zone.

How are you preparing to switch off? Share your plans and tips for other families in the discussion area at the bottom of the Big Switch Off page.
